James Peebles, born April 25, 1935, in Manitoba, Canada, received his B.S. from University of Manitoba in 1958 and his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1962. He began teaching at Princeton University in the early sixties and became a full professor in 1972, transitioning to emeritus status in 2000. Among his many honors, Peebles has been awarded the 2005 Crafoord Prize with astrophysicist James Gunn, the 2004 Shaw Prize, and the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded “for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology.”
