Camillo De Lellis Elected Fellow of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei

Camillo De Lellis, IBM von Neumann Professor in the School of Mathematics, has been elected as a fellow of Italy’s most historic scientific academy: the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. He is one of only 46 scholars to be honored with this distinction in 2025.

Founded in 1603 by Italian scientist Federico Cesi and counting Galileo Galilei as one of its first members, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei works to “promote, coordinate, integrate, and disseminate scientific knowledge.”

Election to its fellowship is reserved for scholars who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to their fields. The 2025 fellows will be formally welcomed during the Academy’s opening ceremony for the 2025–26 academic year, which will take place on November 14. Each new fellow will receive a commemorative lapel pin in recognition of their achievements.

De Lellis’s election to the Accademia dei Lincei reflects the international esteem in which his pioneering research in mathematics is held. An influential figure in the fields of calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, and fluid dynamics, De Lellis’s work has shaped modern mathematical thought. His research has already been recognized with numerous prizes, including the Stampacchia Medal (2009), SIAG/APDE Prize (2013), Fermat Prize (2013), Caccioppoli Prize (2014), Amerio Prize (2015), Bocher Prize (2020), Feltrinelli Prize (2020), and the Myriam Mirzakhani Prize (2021).

In addition to De Lellis, a number of other IAS scholars have been elected to the Academy in 2025. This includes Vieri Mastropietro, Member (2002) and Visitor (2003, 2022) in the School of Mathematics; Andrea Malchiodi, Member (2002–03, 2008) in the School; Vincenzo Ferrone, Visitor (2004) in the School of Historical Studies; and Maxim Kontsevich, Member (1992–3) in the Schools of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Visitor (2002) in the School of Mathematics.
