The Lod Mosaic: A Spectacular Roman Mosaic Floor

Scala Arts Publishers, Inc., has published The Lod Mosaic: A Spectacular Roman Mosaic Floor (2015), edited by Glen W. Bowersock, Professor Emeritus in the School of Historical Studies, Gideon Avni, Amir Gorzalczany, Joshua Schwartz, and Rina Talgam. In 1996, a series of Roman mosaic floors were accidentally uncovered during highway construction in the modern Israeli town of Lod. The mosaics feature elegant and superbly crafted animals, fish, birds, and other creatures, dating to around 300 C.E. Institute Trustee Shelby White funded the creation of a museum, The Shelby White and Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center, to house the mosaic on the site where it was found. Published to celebrate the museum’s opening, this volume is the only book on the exceptional archaeological find.
