Martin Chooljian, Trustee Emeritus, longtime Friend of the Institute, beloved personal friend to many in the community, and one of the Institute’s most generous benefactors, has passed away at the age of 90.

IAS Trustee Mario Draghi, "who is credited with saving the euro, … will be tasked with guiding the country through the twin crises of the coronavirus and a crumbling economy. Draghi, who formerly served as the head of the European Central Bank, took the oath of office with support from across the political spectrum with all but one of Italy's major parties backing him."

Sir James D. Wolfensohn, Chairman of Wolfensohn & Company, L.L.C. and a global champion of human rights, economic justice, scholarship, and the arts, died on November 25, 2020 at his home in Manhattan.

IAS Trustee Manjul Bhargava is part of a committee that has designed the first comprehensive education policy to be adopted by the Indian government in 34 years. The policy sets India on a path to providing universal access to high-quality education.

Six IAS scholars have been announced as newly appointed members of American Philosophical Society: Alondra Nelson, Harold F. Linder Chair of the School of Social Science; Ewine Fleur van Dishoeck, IAS Trustee and Visitor; and former IAS scholars Angela N. H. Creager, Maribel Fierro, M. Catherine Gallagher, and James Campbell Scott.

Schmidt Futures has awarded $1 million to promote a project led by James Stone, Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, that seeks to deepen our understanding of various cosmic phenomena. Eric Schmidt, cofounder of Schmidt Futures, serves on the IAS Board of Trustees.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed economist Ann-Kristin Achleitner to its Board of Trustees. Achleitner is a Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance in the School of Management at the Technical University of Munich.

Jörn Rausing, a non-executive director of the Tetra Laval Group Board, has been appointed to Institute for Advanced Study's Board of Trustees, effective May 4, 2019.  

“The Institute for Advanced Study is laying the groundwork for intellectual and scientific breakthroughs that enrich our society and enhance our understanding of the universe,” stated Chavez, who serves as a Vice Chairman of the Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Global Co-Head of its Securities Division. “I am proud to lend my energies to this fundamental pursuit.”

Academic Trustee Ewine van Dishoeck has been recognized with the 2018 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics for her contributions to observational, theoretical, and laboratory astrochemistry.
