Rachel Schine studies the literatures and social histories of the premodern Islamic world. Her research focuses on constructions of Blackness, Arabness, and Muslimness in popular cultural materials. While at the IAS, she will be working on a book about the role of linguistic, literary, and economic exchange with East Africa and the wider Indian Ocean world in creating and crossing racialized boundaries during the Mamluk period (1250-1517CE).
