Early Modern World / Colonial Latin America
Nicole T. Hughes's forthcoming first book argues that missionaries, conquistadors, and Indigenous elites created foundational narratives of New Spain and Brazil by envisioning distant conflicts through theater. At IAS, she will begin a new project on narratives of death and dying, and especially of martyrdom, in the Americas.
