Current Employee Benefits

IAS employees are able to choose between three healthcare plan options for medical coverage. Each option includes prescription coverage and vision coverage. Dental coverage is also available.

Life Insurance and AD&D coverage are provided at no cost to IAS employees at 1.5X their respective annual salary. Employees are also covered under private short-term and long-term disability plans and have the opportunity to purchase additional voluntary insurance for themselves, their spouse and children.

The Institute contributes 9.5% of an employee’s base compensation up to the Social Security wage base and 15% of base compensation above the wage base to the IRS cap into a 401(a) Plan. Employees may participate in a voluntary tax-deferred annuity plan into a 403(b) Plan.

Employees are eligible to take college-credit courses that either enhance skills in their current position or prepare them for another appointment at IAS. The reimbursement is 100% of the first $1,500 in tuition and fees and 75% of the remaining costs up to a maximum of $5,250 per year. 

IAS employees are able to earn up to 28 days per fiscal year of paid time off. In addition, employees usually have paid time off on IAS holidays. The Institute's holiday schedule is announced annually and normally includes: New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and the days between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Position Summary

The Academic Assistant is responsible for providing administrative assistance and clerical support to the School Administrative Officer, Faculty, Members, and Visitors.

Essential Job Duties

Faculty Support, Workshops, and Seminars (50%)

  • Provides administrative assistance and clerical support for 3 permanent Faculty members
  • Prepares letters of recommendation in LaTeX, tracks the deadlines, and issues reminders
  • Organizes weekly seminars led by assigned Faculty
  • Coordinates short-term visits for corresponding seminar speakers
  • Coordinates short-term visits for Faculty collaborators
  • Collaborates with the Program Manager to plan workshops and conferences for assigned Faculty
  • Assists with monitoring deadlines and compiling data for Faculty grant reports
  • Assists with monitoring deadlines and meeting specifications for journals and other publishers

Member Support (30%)

  • Drafts, sends, tracks, and files new Member offer letters
  • Guides new Members through the onboarding process
  • Turns over Member offices and submits facilities requests as necessary
  • Schedules and facilitates Member check-in meetings
  • Writes and sends annual funding and travel letters
  • Coordinates short-term visits for approved Member collaborators
  • Processes Member reimbursements
  • Sends and answers questions about departure instructions.

School Projects (10%)

  • Coordinates named lecture series, including speaker logistics, publicity, and formal dinners
  • Compiles data for annual grant reporting, including Participant Data and Post-Doctoral Tracking
  • Administers the annual Salem Prize
  • Completes monthly P3 updates for previous Members
  • Updates and maintains spring and fall award nomination lists
  • Processes 50% of the School’s ELP forms

All Other Duties as Assigned by the Supervisor (10%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1 year in an administrative role
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency in standard office software, including Google Sheets and Microsoft Word
  • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Drupal
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn LaTeX

Position Summary

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is seeking a 2026 Civic Science Fellow for The Public's Science initiative, a collaborative effort with a leading research center to foster a new social contract for American research policy. This initiative seeks to reimagine scientific research as a genuinely public endeavor—one oriented toward inclusive participation and serving not only national interests but also the diverse communities that sustain and are affected by the scientific enterprise. 

The full-time, 18-month Fellow will serve as a key member of the Science, Technology, and Social Values Lab in the School of Social Science at IAS, led by Harold F. Linder Professor Alondra Nelson at IAS, and work collaboratively with a team from the partnering institution led by its founding director.  The Fellow will develop digital infrastructure for public engagement, support editorial development of scholarly publications, conduct research on participatory governance models, and cultivate relationships across the emerging community of practice working to advance public science.

Essential Job Duties

In support of The Public’s Science Initiative (75%)

  • Design and implement a digital platform for The Public's Science that facilitates public input and fosters ongoing dialogue through discussion forums, community feedback mechanisms on emerging policy proposals, livestreaming and archiving of convenings, and interactive tools for exploring alternative research governance models
  • Develop, curate, and edit content for the platform, including short-form essays, summaries of academic research for the public, and multimedia materials that translate complex ideas for diverse audiences
  • Support the development of essays for The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science special issue and the final policy document "Towards The Public’s Science: The Next Seventy-Five Years," including coordinating peer review, managing revision cycles, working with authors to strengthen arguments and accessibility, ensuring coherence across contributions from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, and writing summaries that make academic ideas accessible to broader audiences
  • Research and synthesize scholarly literature on participatory research governance, international research policy models, case studies of successful public engagement in research priority-setting, or as needed by Public Science Committees; conduct informational interviews with relevant experts and practitioners
  • Cultivate relationships across the emerging community of practice, identifying additional voices that should be included and facilitating connections between participants working on complementary aspects of public science
  • Collaborate on the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and proposals related to the initiative
  • Travel to meetings, seminars, and conferences as needed to advance the initiative's goals

In Support of the Fellow’s Professional Development (25%)

  • Develop expertise in public scholarship and science communication through mentorship, workshops, and practice translating research for diverse audiences, including policymakers, journalists, and civil society
  • Build professional networks across academic, policy, civic, and media sectors through The Public's Science initiative, connecting with researchers, science leaders, policy practitioners, science communicators, and civic organizations working to reimagine the social contract for American research
  • Gain experience in research policy engagement through The Public's Science Committee work, public forums, and development of the initiative's policy framework for a new social contract for American research
  • Participate fully in the intellectual life of IAS, including seminars, workshops, and interdisciplinary research discussions that deepen expertise in science policy and public engagement

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.A./M.S. in science writing, multimedia journalism, or science and health journalism or Ph.D. in the social sciences, sciences, or humanities
  • Demonstrated experience in digital communications, including content development, platform management, and online community engagement
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with ability to translate complex ideas for diverse audiences
  • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational abilities
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to draft original correspondence, reports, abstracts, briefings, and summaries; and to condense and synthesize academic and non-academic research, policy documents, and other materials
  • Strong demonstrated interest in the social, cultural, and political implications of science and technology
  • Capacity to work independently on multiple projects by prioritizing, multi-tasking, and adapting flexibly

The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, is one of the world’s preeminent centers for fundamental inquiry and foundational discovery. As it prepares to embark upon its second century, the Institute seeks its first Institute Librarian to envision and expand library services for the next generation of an international community dedicated to curiosity-driven research and the free dissemination of knowledge. This leadership opportunity calls for an innovative and versatile library administrator who can combine operational excellence and expertise with a deep understanding of the Institute’s mission, culture, and values. 

For many years, the Institute has maintained two separate libraries on its campus: one for the School of Social Science and the School of Historical Studies, and one for the School of Mathematics and the School of Natural Sciences. The Institute Librarian will lead the development of their services and collections to ensure they remain responsive to the evolving needs of the Institute and its scholars. The Institute Librarian will also curate the library spaces, including a major venue under renovation that is expected to reopen in 2027, as well as the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center. In addition, the Institute Librarian will steward the Institute’s long-standing partnership with the Princeton University Library, building capacity for collaboration between institutions and their respective collections and services.

Supported by an endowment of $1.3 billion, the Institute is well-positioned to sustain and augment the library resources that nourish the work of its 28 permanent Faculty and more than 250 visiting scholars who reside on its 600-acre campus. The library collections and archives are housed in a variety of campus spaces and locations that figure prominently in the Institute’s design as a haven for discovery, offering abundant opportunities for solitude and encounter. Most importantly, the Institute Librarian will manage and direct the staff of 10 library and archives professionals who provide a high level of personalized support for the diverse needs of the Institute and its scholars.   

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Institute Librarian will work closely with the Director and Faculty representatives from the Institute's Schools. The Institute Librarian will also serve as a member of the Director’s senior management team and benefit from their cross-functional expertise and collaborative support.
