Mechthild Fend specializes in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French art and visual culture. She has a particular interest in images of the body and the historically changing relations between art and science.
During her time a the IAS she will be working on a book project entitled The Pathological Image: Seeing Disease in Nineteenth-Century Britain and France. It will engage with the question how the increasing use of images in the practices of pathology contributed to shaping modern notions of disease.
