Karen Uhlenbeck to Receive AMS 2020 Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement

Karen Uhlenbeck, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Mathematics, will be awarded the 2020 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the American Mathematical Society.

Uhlenbeck is recognized "for her long-lasting influence in geometric topology and analysis and for her mentorship of young people and women in mathematics."

Uhlenbeck is the cofounder of both the Park City Mathematics Institute and Women and Mathematics programs at IAS. In March 2019, she became the first woman to receive the Abel Prize.

Presented annually, the Steele Prize is awarded for the cumulative influence of the total mathematical work of the recipient, high level of research over a period of time, particular influence on the development of a field, and influence on mathematics through Ph.D. students.
