Trustee Mario Draghi Receives International Cooperation Award
Mario Draghi, Trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study since 1998, has been announced as the recipient of the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, one of Spain's most prestigious honors. The jury recognized Draghi "for his role as a key figure in the defence of European integration and international cooperation, being widely recognized for his leadership and firm commitment to the fundamental values and advancement of the European Union."
In his role on the Board of Trustees, Draghi brings to IAS his extensive experience as both an economist and statesman who has shaped European policy for decades. His commitment to international cooperation aligns with the Institute's mission of advancing fundamental knowledge across both geographical and disciplinary borders.
Described by the Princess of Asturias Foundation as being "renowned for his independence and long-term vision," Draghi was praised for having "persistently advocated for a more united, resilient and supportive Europe." Among his notable achievements highlighted by the Foundation was his landmark report on Europe's competitiveness, commissioned in 2023 and presented in 2024. The report, which "stresses the importance of strengthening the EU’s ties and of developing a common strategy for growth and improving competitiveness," underscored Draghi's "continued commitment to strengthening the continent’s institutions and economies."
Throughout his distinguished career, Draghi has held numerous influential positions including Governor of the Bank of Italy (2005–11), President of the European Central Bank (2011–19), and Prime Minister of Italy (2021–22). He has also served as Executive Director of the World Bank (1985–90) and held senior positions at Goldman Sachs.
