Peter Sarnak Awarded Honorary Doctorate from Stockholm University

At a ceremony held today, September 29, 2023, Peter Sarnak, Gopal Prasad Professor in the Institute's School of Mathematics, will receive an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University. The doctorate is an expression of the University's appreciation for those who have made outstanding contributions to one of its academic disciplines.

Sarnak was lauded by the University for his work in number theory and mathematical analysis, which is "famous for great depth and tremendous breadth," and is executed "with a vision that has shaped whole lines of research, including applications such as expander graphs and quantum computing." His service to the mathematical community, including his many years as editor of preeminent journals, such as the Annals of Mathematics, was also praised.

Other honors conferred on Sarnak during his career include the Wolf Prize in Mathematics (2014) and the Royal Society Sylvester Medal (2019). He is also a Fellow of the (UK) Royal Society and a Member of the (US) National Academy of Sciences, and he has worked to develop the mathematical sciences in his native South Africa.
