IAS Scholars Win 2025 Guggenheim Fellowships

Nine past and incoming scholars across three IAS Schools—Historical Studies, Mathematics, and Social Science—have received 2025 Guggenheim Fellowships. Chosen through a rigorous application and peer review process from a pool of nearly 3,500 applicants, the Class of 2025 Guggenheim Fellows was selected based on “both prior career achievement and exceptional promise.”

From the School of Historical Studies, the new Guggenheim Fellows include Members Ana Lucia Araujo (2022) and Karen B. Graubart (2021), Willis F. Doney Member Rhodri Lewis (2015–16), George William Cottrell Jr. Member Katherine L. Jansen (2013), and Hetty Goldman Member Yannis Hamilakis (2012–13), along with incoming scholars Thomas Burman and Cecilia Gaposchkin, who will join IAS for the 2025–26 academic year. Their collective work encompasses numerous areas of historical research, from the social meanings of classical archaeological monuments to the early writings of English philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon.

From the School of Mathematics, Veblen Research Instructor Maria Chudnovsky (2003–05) has been recognized for her contributions to the fields of graph theory and combinatorics. Among other achievements, she is known for her role in proving the so-called “Strong Perfect Graph Theorem” in 2002.

From the School of Social Science, Visitor Kristin Hoganson (2006–07) has also been honored with a fellowship. Hoganson’s work pertains to the history of U.S. foreign relations and the history of U.S. empire in the long nineteenth century, stretching through World War I.

These distinguished scholars are part of a cohort of 198 Guggenheim Fellows for 2025, whose accomplishments represent excellence across numerous disciplines in the arts, humanities, and sciences. The Fellowship is awarded by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Established in 1925, the Foundation provides support to exceptional individuals in diverse fields of knowledge and artistic expression.
