‘Hidden’ Bible chapter discovered using UV light

Grigory Kessel, past Member in the School of Historical Studies (2021–22), has played a key role in the rediscovery of a "hidden chapter" of Biblical text nearly 1,500 years after it was first written. Kessel used ultraviolet photography to find the chapter hidden underneath two layers of text on a reused parchment.

"Researchers said the newly discovered text is an interpretation of the Bible’s Matthew chapter 12 which was originally translated as part of the Old Syriac translations. They said the fragment offers a 'unique gateway' to the early phase in the history of the textual transmission of the Gospels."
