Edward Witten Named Honorary Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales
Edward Witten, Professor Emeritus in the School of Natural Sciences, has been made an honorary fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (LSW). The fellowship recognizes Witten's "profound contributions to contemporary physics, including supersymmetric and topological quantum field theory, string theory, M-theory, quantum gravity, and quantum information theory."
The Learned Society of Wales selects honorary fellows for their "expertise and experience, and their research and knowledge leadership." Their official announcement highlights Witten as "the only physicist to receive the Fields Medal," acknowledging his receipt of mathematics' highest honor in 1990—a rare achievement for a physicist.
The 2025 fellows are described as providing "answers to many of the most pressing questions we face today." Professor Hywel Thomas, President of the LSW, remarked, "We face a huge number of challenges, from climate change to political turmoil to emerging health threats. The answer to so many of these problems will be found in research and robust civic institutions. That expertise is evident in our new Fellows. I'm delighted to welcome them to the Learned Society of Wales."
