How did the majority of Romans get by? What were their strategies for survival? This talk unearths the everyday economics of the Roman 90 percent—their producing, consuming, borrowing, and saving. In doing so, it lays out a new vision of the Roman economy, constructed from the bottom up.
Kim Bowes is the BFC Presidential Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Director of the American Academy in Rome. The National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Guggenheim Foundation have supported her fieldwork and writing.
Labyrinth Books will be on site to offer Surviving Rome: The Economic Lives of the 90 Percent (Princeton University Press, 2025) for sale.
