Noa Turel’s book project is focused on painter-engineers in French and Italian Renaissance courts and their role in engendering Europe’s self-perception as a technological civilization. Initially trading on the aura of machines, then associated with the Islamicate world, as exotic and wondrous, painters facilitated Europe’s global exploration and, eventually, hegemony.
