Michael Peachin’s project seeks to place the work of the high imperial Roman jurisprudents into a wider context than has typically been presumed for them, and then to consider the consequences. The jurisprudence now preserved by Justinian’s Digest was originally a vast literature about law, and must be read and interpreted as such. This impacts the substantive law.
