Mark Dike DeLancey’s research has primarily focused on palace architecture in Cameroon and more recently on contemporary painting and identity in Mauritania. While at IAS, he will be working on a book manuscript that reinterprets the late-fifteenth-century Tomb, or as he argues it the Minaret, of Askia Muhammad in Gao, Mali in light of that renowned ruler’s pilgrimage to Mecca and political ambitions.
