João Jose Reis is interested in the history of slavery in Brazil, particularly urban slavery, collective and individual resistance, biographies of ex-slaves, among other themes. At IAS, Reis will be working on a book-length biography of a Hausa slave who obtained freedom to become a rich merchant and slaveowner in nineteenth-century Bahia.
