At IAS, Lauzière is writing a book on how to rethink the connection between reason and the development of Islamic intellectual history in the modern period. The book argues that it was the popularization of scientific rational outlooks which ironically facilitated the development of political Islam (Islamism) and Sunni ultra-orthodoxy (Salafism) in modern Arab societies.
