Agnieszka Szymańska specializes in the visual culture of Christian monasticism in late antique Egypt. Her forthcoming book "Sacred Spectating in Late Antique Egypt: Monastic Painting as Spiritual Experience" (Cambridge University Press, 2026) traces the classical antecedents of sacred spectating and grounds this Christian ascetic practice in the monastic prayer spaces of late antique Egypt. Her current book project, "Virtual Reality in Late Antique Egypt," theorizes monastic prayer spaces as immersive environments, filling a critical gap in the recent histories of virtual reality.
