Edward T. Cone Concert Series: Vicky Chow Plays Tristan Perich
In this series, IAS Artist-in-Residence David Lang highlights performances from our musical archives for you to enjoy during your time at home. Today’s selection was performed at IAS in January 2018 as part of the Edward T. Cone Concert Series, and was broadcast on WWFM’s The Classical Network In Concert, hosted by David Osenberg.
David Lang writes: Vicky Chow is one of the most exciting young pianists working in the new music world today, known mostly as the pianist in the ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars. Surface Image is a tumultuous evening-length work she commissioned from composer/visual artist/inventor Tristan Perich. Tristan is a pioneer of one bit, low fidelity electronic music, and for this work he surrounds the pianist dramatically with a wall of 40 tiny electronic speakers, whose elemental electronic sounds complement the oceanic music of the piano.
