Edward T. Cone Concert Series: Stephen Drury Plays “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!”

For the Teatime at Home series, IAS Artist-in-Residence David Lang writes:

On today’s rebroadcast, pianist Stephen Drury plays Frederic Rzewski’s masterpiece The People United Will Never Be Defeated! This piece, thirty-six variations on a Chilean revolutionary song, cycles kaleidoscopically through every style of piano playing in music history, from Bach-style counterpoint to pointillism to stride piano to free improvisation. Wildly virtuosic, it is regarded by many as the greatest piano work of the last fifty years. And, might I add, Drury gives one of the most jaw-droppingly spectacular performances of this piece that I have ever heard.
