Marion Katz studies the premodern history of Islamic legal thought. Her current project focuses on the historical rise and contestation of concept of religious merit (thawab), and particularly debates around transactions involving the generation of merit for donation to another person. It uses these developments as lenses for larger questions in premodern Islamic intellectual history, including the issue of premodern Islamic precursors of the secular/religious binary.
