ITG Getting Started

Your go-to resource for technology tools, support, and onboarding essentials, tailored specifically for new staff, faculty, and members of the IAS community for Historical Studies and Social Sciences. This guide is managed by the Information Technology Group (ITG) and is designed to help you seamlessly integrate into the Institute for Advanced Study while making the most of campus IT services. Campus Wi-Fi

IAS: a public Wi-Fi network that provides general internet access in certain places, but it can be less secure.

Eduroam: a secure network for members, long-term visitors, and staff of participating institutions, allowing access to library resources and academic services with institutional credentials.

Password/Passphrase

Your IAS credentials give you access to a wealth of resources as well as to our internal restricted resources. By accepting the IAS credentials, you agree to be bound by our Computer Use Policy for those credentials. 

Protect your IAS credentials at all times! Practice general precautions when using unfamiliar computers. Do not save passwords or passphrases on shared computers. Do not share your password or passphrase with anyone. Keep your computer up to date on operating system updates and anti-virus software/definitions.

• Changing your password is simple on a desktop computer or online. On desktops, you can follow the change password procedure in the Operating System. Online, this can be done through reset.ias.edu.

Email

All faculty, members, and staff are provided with an email address in the format: [email protected]. Email can be accessed online through Zimbra (for all staff or scholars with mailboxes created before August 30, 2026) or Outlook 365 (for all scholars with mailboxes created after August 30, 2026). Scholars and staff are also able to access their email through desktop applications (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.)

Updateme

UpdateMe is a convenient tool provided by the Institute that allows you to easily manage your information in our records. You can update your contact details, vehicle information, and add network devices such as TVs or gaming consoles. You can also manage your multi-factor authentication (MFA) settings and add sponsored accounts.

MFA - Duo

We protect our users by enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across many IAS-provided services. To access IAS services such as webmail or Updateme, you need to use Single-Sign-On during login. This must be completed to access most IAS resources.

VPN

For remote access to internal services hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), we utilize the OpenVPN software. You can connect to IAS and access restricted resources as if you were on campus. Using the VPN software, you can also mount your IAS network drive on your local computer and access RemoteApp. ITG provided laptops will have this preinstalled. Mobile Printing 

IAS utilizes PaperCut to provide printing services to our clients using laptops or mobile devices on campus. You can print via the IAS and eduroam Wi-Fi networks while on campus. Mobile printing must be completed using your IAS email and password.

Desktop Printing

Printing is available on IAS desktops in your office, managed by ITG. Public Printers may already be set up on your computer.

Requesting Accounts

Staff, faculty, and members can request various accounts by emailing [email protected]. Each request will be evaluated individually.

AI Tools

IAS Computing has provided a range of Artificial Intelligence tools for IAS scholars and staff.

Dropbox Transfer

A secure file-sharing feature that allows easy sending of large files or folders. A Dropbox account is required.

MySchoolBuilding (School Dude)

MySchoolBuilding is an online platform that allows staff to submit and track requests for facility maintenance and repairs. It streamlines communication with the facilities department, ensuring efficient handling of requests.

Adobe

All IAS members, staff & faculty are provided with an Adobe account, and Adobe software is preinstalled on all IAS desktops and laptops. You can activate your Adobe account on up to 2 devices, including personal devices.

Zoom

All IAS staff members are provided with Zoom accounts. Please sign in using Single Sign-On (SSO).

Network Drives

Everyone with an account gets a personal network drive that includes snapshot backups with a capacity of 20GB. Access to departmental network drives requires managerial approval.

Loaner/Equipment request

Microsoft RemoteApp

A virtual application solution that lets users run Windows-based applications from a local device. These applications are launched from a remote server but appear to be installed locally, allowing users to open and save files on their local or network drives.

Crashplan Backup

• ITG provides cloud backup services for ITG-provided laptops. A Computer Support Specialist will assist with installation and setup.

Protect Your Computing Environment

To protect yourself and your work, ensure that your antivirus software is up to date with the latest virus definitions. 

• Modern Windows systems come with built-in anti-virus software. Please note that Windows 10 reached its end of life on October 14, 2025.
