Working from Personal Devices

This page serves as a guide for ITG users who wish to utilize IAS resources using their own computing devices.

Protecting Your IAS Credentials

Your IAS credentials give you access to a wealth of resources as well as to our internal restricted resources. By accepting the IAS credentials, you are bound by our Computer Use Policy for those credentials.

Protect your IAS credentials at all times! Practice general precaution when using computers unfamiliar to you. Do not save passwords or passphrases on shared computers. Do not share your password or passphrase with anyone. Keep your computer up to date on operating system updates and anti-virus software/definitions.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

We protect our users by using Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) on many IAS-provided services. For more information on MFA, please see our page on multi-factor authentication at IAS.

Wireless (WiFi)

There are two wireless networks available on-campus:

  • IAS - General use network with access to Internet but not to restricted IAS resources such as Electronic Library resources.
  • eduroam - While on-campus and connected to eduroam, you will have access to the Internet as well as to restricted IAS resources. Users must install an eduroam certificate on their computers before they are able to use this network, please visit the IAS Wireless User Guide for more information and instructions.

You can also use your IAS credentials to connect to the eduroam network on participating campuses, click here for a list of EDUROAM participants.

VPN (Software)

When using your own personal computing devices, it is highly recommended that you install the IAS VPN software, OpenVPN. Once installed, you can connect to IAS and access restricted resources as if you were on campus. By using the VPN software, you also have the ability to mount your IAS network drive to your local computer and access RemoteApp

Changing your IAS Passphrase Remotely

If you wish to change your passphrase while off-campus, please see the Web method of changing your IAS passphrase.

Microsoft RemoteApp

RemoteApp is a virtual application solution that allows users to run windows-based applications from a local computer or device. It allows users to launch virtual applications from a server that appear on their computer as if it is installed locally, but in reality are running on a remote server. Users are able to open and save files locally or to their network drives.

File Sharing

Dropbox Transfer is our recommended solution for secure file sharing.

IAS Network Storage

As a user with IAS credentials, you have access to a defined amount of IAS network storage space that is backed up. If you wish to access IAS network storage from your personal device, please see our page on mapping network drives

Mobile Printing

IAS utilizes PaperCut to provide printing services to our clients using mobile devices on campus. You are able to print via the IAS and eduroam WiFi networks while on campus. For more information, please visit our page on mobile printing.

Protect Your Computing Environment

Protect yourself and your work by making sure your Anti-Virus software is up to date and current on the virus definitions.

  • Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 have built-in Anti-virus software.
