This book talk draws from Lars Behrisch’s recent publication Democracy’s Double Helix: Participation, Equality and Revolution in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2025), which offers a long-term study of the genesis of democracy across Europe and North America from the Middle Ages through the "Age of Revolutions" of the late eighteenth century.
Lars Behrisch is Associate Professor of Political History at Utrecht University, specializing in early modern comparative European history—from France, Britain, and Germany all the way to Russia. Behrisch's interests focus on political culture but include the history of religion, urban history, the history of crime, and the history of identities.
Behrisch will be available for a book signing following the talk. Labyrinth Books will be on site to offer the sale of Democracy's Double Helix.
