Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (PICSciE) Visit Tutorial Class - Day 2

Scientific Visualization with VisIt

This two-day tutorial will provide attendees with a practical introduction to VisIt, an open source scientific visualization and data analysis application. VisIt is used to visualize simulation results on wide range of platforms from laptops to many of the worlds top supercomputers. This tutorial assumes no previous experience with VisIt. The first day will provide an overview of VisIt, and a hands on tutorial that will walk participants through the basics of using VisIt, as well as more advanced use cases, including python scripting, movie making, and creation of presentation graphics. The tutorial will focus on demonstration of VisIt's support for five important scientific visualization scenarios: data exploration, quantitative analysis, comparative analysis, visual debugging, and communication of results. The second day will focus on several advanced topics in the development of custom plug-ins for VisIt, and Q&A sessions where particular needs can be addressed and explored with the presenter. Dave Pugmire is a Computer Scientist, and Visualization Lead in the Scientific Data Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Utah in 2000. He joined ORNL in 2007 where his research interests include large scale parallel visualization and analysis, parallel vector field analysis, and visualization infrastructures for hybrid, high-concurrency systems. He is a key software engineer for the VisIt project, as well as a founding member of the Extreme Scale Analysis and Visualization Library (EAVL). Prior to joining ORNL, he spent 5 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the High Performance Computing Group where his research focused on visualization methods for immersive displays, and image compositing for parallel rendering. In 2006 he won an R&D 100 Award for work the work on parallel image compositing.
