Carl P. Feinberg, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Relational Architects Intl., a computer software firm, has endowed a Professorship of Theoretical Physics in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study. The Carl P. Feinberg Professorship, which will be held by Juan Maldacena, Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, will provide support related to all aspects of academic appointment and community life that are unique characteristics of the Institute experience.

“We are extremely grateful for Carl’s extraordinary gift to the Institute,” said Robbert Dijkgraaf, Institute Director and Leon Levy Professor. “His generous donation strengthens the Institute’s financial foundation and endorses the importance of pursuing the answers to the deepest and most relevant questions about our universe from the smallest to the largest scales.”

“It’s my honor and pleasure to make an investment in civilization by endowing the Carl P. Feinberg Professorship and naming Juan Maldacena as the first chair,” said Carl P. Feinberg. “Juan’s seminal ideas underlie much of the current progress in the field of theoretical physics, and I’m confident his research will continue to be of inestimable benefit to the world. I’ve always considered the Institute to be unique and unrivaled as a center for unconstrained research, and I’m grateful that I can support its mission.”

Friends of the Institute since 2002, Carl and his wife Toby were also major contributors to the successful completion of the Campaign for the Institute. Feinberg graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and studied programming at New York University.
