Recent, rapid developments in artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment have demonstrated technology’s potential to drastically transform and potentially improve the lives of many people across the world. From unlocking millions of hours’ worth of biological research in a fraction of the time to reducing the amount of energy used by industrial power plants, the use of AI could power the change needed to combat some of the most pressing issues of our time. But robust, adaptive strategies, including practices and policies, are needed to ensure that AI technology will benefit all of humanity. Strategies to ensure that AI tools are developed and used responsibly must be a fundamental part of the development process rather than an afterthought.

Calls to steer AI systems for good have come from many quarters, including from researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and the public. These varied perspectives suggest a continuum of proximate and future areas of concern such as destabilization of the employment sector and in worker experience, bias and discrimination, security vulnerabilities, sustainability issues, the erosion of democracy and public trust, catastrophic outcomes, and more. Sociotechnical strategies—technical accountability mechanisms, iterative design and deployment practices, and agile government policies—are needed to ensure these powerful technologies are developed ethically and safely.

Join a panel of computer scientists, social scientists, technology developers, and policymakers for discussion of how the research community, industry, government, civil society, and the public can work collaboratively on strategies for the development of AI systems that embed a diverse and representative range of humanity’s priorities and advance democratic values.
