Hunting for Dark Matter Underground: the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search
A wide array of evidence has led to the conclusion that the universe's visible structure is dwarfed by some form of undetected exotic "dark matter". The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) seeks to directly detect the interactions of this particle dark matter in terrestrial detectors. Using simultaneous measurements of ionization and athermal phonons, CDMS has set world-class limits on the interaction cross sections of dark matter. I will discuss the status and future prospects of the CDMS II experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, including its most recent published results and the progress of our ongoing data run with greatly enhanced sensitivity. I will also describe the development underway toward SuperCDMS, an extension of our technology to larger detector masses, and its complementary relationship to collider investigations of dark matter's origins.
