Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory/Princeton University Princeton Center for Theoretical Science (PCTS) Workshop - Day 2
Magnetic Fields in Laboratory High Energy Density Plasmas (LaB)
This workshop is sponsored and organized by PPPL, with support from PCTS. The “LaB” workshop series aims at bringing together, in a trans-disciplinary forum, scientists interested in the emerging areas of coupling laboratory high-energy-density (HED) plasmas and external and internal intense magnetic fields in varied domains, including plasma astrophysics, inertial fusion, and particle acceleration. Magnetic fields have been widely recognized to have profound effects in these areas, but specific progress is hindered by limited theoretical understanding and diagnostics capabilities. The main aim of such a forum is to serve as an exchange of ideas, discussion of theoretical and experimental work that has been done, and to explore potential new collaborations in these critical areas. After holding two meetings in 2012 by D. Froula and 2013 by H. Ji, in the USA, the third meeting by J. Fuchs took place in France in December 2013. We will now host our 4th meeting during November 11-13, 2015 at Princeton Center for Theoretical Science (PCTS), Princeton University. In the spirit of the PCTS, we emphasize crosscutting issues between theoretical/numerical aspects and experimental/diagnostics aspects in the emerging areas of magnetized HED plasmas: New theoretical ideas and numerical predictions; New experimental results and diagnostics on magnetic fields in HED plasmas; and New applications of laboratory magnetized HED plasmas to astrophysics. Local Organizers: Amitava Bhattacharjee (Astrophysical Sciences; PPPL), Phillip Efthimion (Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory), Will Fox (Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory), Lan Gao (Astrophysical Sciences), and Hantao Ji (Astrophysical Sciences; PPPL).
