Rubenstein Commons
Join us for an Artist Salon on Wednesday, February 8 with Soo Yeon Lyuh in Rubenstein Commons.
Hailing from Daegu, South Korea by way of Princeton, New Jersey, Soo Yeon Lyuh is a virtuoso of the haegeum, an ancient Korean instrument with a small resonator and 2 long, silk strings. She was rigorously trained in Korean traditional court and folk repertoires from a very young age. After receiving her DMA in traditional Korean music from Seoul National University she was invited to collaborate in a series of concerts with the legendary Kronos Quartet, and this cross-cultural interchange set her on the path of developing an entirely new repertoire for traditional Korean instruments, and an entirely new way of playing them.
Since then, she has dedicated herself to pushing the boundaries between musical communities, composing and performing her own new music, finding common ground in collaborations with musicians from different musical, geographic and ethnic backgrounds, and giving workshops and concerts of traditional and contemporary music, for all ages and ethnic groups, all around the world.
The IAS servery will be open for dinner following the program at 6:15. This will require reservations which can be made here.
