Mathematics Software

Please review the instructions below for launching the applications on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux office computers 

LiE:

On a command line, type: lie

Macaulay:

First, you must ssh to ssh.math.ias.edu. Once there, type: M2

[Note: If you would like the application installed on your IAS office computer, please send an email message to the Math Computing Group.]

MAGMA:

First, you must ssh to ssh.math.ias.edu.  Once there, type magma.

[Note: If you would like to run MAGMA on your laptop, please send an email message to the Math Computing Group with the MAC addresses for your laptop.  Please visit the How to find your device's MAC Address? webpage for instructions.]

Maple: 

There are two different ways to launch this application:

  • Method 1 - From the command line, type maple or xmaple.
  • Method 2 - From the Application Grid or Application Menu, go to: Mathematics > Maple or Mathematics > Xmaple.

Mathematica

There are two different ways to launch this application:

  • Method 1 - From the command line, type mathematica for the graphical interface or wolfram for the text-based interface.
  • Method 2 - From the Application Grid or Application Menu, go to: Mathematics > Mathematica.

[Note: If you would like to install Mathematica on your laptop, please see the Personal Use Mathematica Licenses webpage for more information.]  

Matlab:

There are a few different ways to launch this application:

  • Method 1 - From the command line, type matlab.
  • Method 2 - From the Application Grid or Application Menu, go to: Mathematics > Matlab.
  • Method 3 - From a terminal-based matlab, type wolfram or WolframKernel.

[Note: There is no personal license option available for Matlab.  You may run Matlab remotely by following the instructions below.

  1. Find out the name of your workstation. On a command line, type
$ hostname
It should be in the form of som[a|f|mos|s][Office #].math.ias.edu
where a= A building, f = Fuld, mos = Modular Office Space, s = Simonyi
Office # is your office number.  If there are multiple desks in your office, there may be [a-g] appended at the end.
 
  1. Find out the IP of your workstation. On a command line, type
$ host `hostname`
  1. First create a Port Forward from your laptop through ssh1.math.ias.edu to your IAS office computer (e.g.,  somXXXYYY.math.ias.edu)
$ ssh -L 2222:<IP_NUMBER_FROM_STEP_2>:22 [email protected]
  1. Open another terminal window on your laptop to connect to your workstation
$ ssh -X -p 2222 <your_username>@localhost
  1. From the same terminal window in Step 2, type matlab. It should open up the GUI on your laptop. We currently have 2019a installed.]

Mosek:

On the command line, type mosek.

Sage:

On the command line, type sage.

[Note:  Sage is is an open source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica and Matlab.]
