Member Office Computing Equipment & Policies

The standard computer configuration provided in every School of Mathematics Member's office includes a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) desktop computer paired with one external monitor. Below are additional details about the standard configuration.

Computer:

  • Dell Precision Workstation
  • Intel Core i7-12700K (25MB Cache, 12 Core (8P+4E),  3.6GHz to 5.0GHz or better processor.
  • 32 GB RAM
  • 1 TB SSH hard drive.
  • 1 GB network connection
  • 8x DVD+/-RW/RAM optical drive
  • Logitech C920 or C930 WebCam
  • External speakers or speakers built into the monitor
  • Wired keyboard and mouse
  • Universal Power Supply (UPS)

Monitor:

  • LG 27" 4K monitor
  • Requests for a second 24" external monitor are subject to availability.

Software:

The RHEL desktop computer comes with a variety of pre-installed software applications, including (but not limited to): Firefox, Google Chrome, LibreOffice, MAGMA, Maple, MATLAB, Mathematica, Sage, TeXLive, Thunderbird and Zoom. School of Mathematics Members who need additional software should contact the Math Computing Group to submit an installation request.  Please visit the Mathematics Software webpage for additional information on using various mathematics applications.

We ask that you make note of the following:

  • All School of Math office computers receive software updates during the overnight hours. For this reason, we ask that you do not turn off your IAS office computer when you leave your office for the day.
  • Visiting scholars do not have root privileges on their IAS office computer. If your research requires the installation of additional software on your IAS office computer, please contact the Math Computing Group.

All computing equipment and peripherals provided by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) remain the property of the IAS and must stay in the Member's assigned office at the School of Mathematics. If any equipment or peripherals are temporarily moved from the assigned office, they must be returned before the Member's departure from the IAS School of Mathematics.
