How to find your device's MAC Address?
All personal devices (e.g. personal desktop or laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, TVs, streaming devices, etc.) that need a connection to the Internet requires registration of your hardware or MAC address. A MAC (Media Access Control) address is the hardware address of the Network Interface Card (NIC) in your personal device. If you plan to register your devices via the Updateme website (click on the Register Devices button under Network Devices), you will need to locate each device's MAC address. Use the directions below to locate your device's MAC address.
Linux
- Open a new Terminal window.
Enter: ifconfig -a

Mac OS X (two methods)
Method 1:
- Click on the Apple menu.
- Click on System Preferences.
- Click on Network
- To locate the MAC address for your wireless connection:
- Select AirPort or Wi-Fi from the list on the left.
- Click the Advanced button.
- On the AirPort or Wi-Fi tab, the AirPort ID or Wi-Fi Address is your MAC address. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb.
Method 2:
Only use this method when you need to provide the Math Computnig Group with all MAC addresses associated with your Mac desktop or laptop.
- Open the Terminal application.
- Type the following command: ifconfig | grep ether
Microsoft Windows (two methods)
Method 1:
- Click on the Windows Start button.
- In the Search Programs and Files box type ncpa.cpl and then press Enter.
- Double-click on either Local Area Connection icon (if you are trying to register your Ethernet/wired connection) or Wireless Network Connection.
- In the window that appears, click on Details… In the window that appears, you will see the Physical Address field, which is another name for MAC address. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb.
Method 2:
- Click on the Windows Start button.
- In the Search Programs and Files box type cmd.
- Enter: ipconfig /all. The Physical Address is your MAC address. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb. You will see a physical address for each network connection available on your Windows device.
Android
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on Wireless Controls.
- Tap on Wi-Fi settings.
- Tap the 3 dots on the top right corner.
- Tap Advanced.
- Swipe all the way down to the bottom, and you will see both the MAC address. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb.
iOS devices (e.g. iPhone and iPad)
- From the Home menu, tap on Settings.
- Tap on General.
- Tap on About.
- Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb.
Kindle
- From the Home screen press Menu.
- Select Settings.
- The Wi-Fi MAC Address is located toward the bottom of the screen in the Device Info section. It will look similar to 00:ab:23:4e:55:bb.
Amazon Fire Stick (Interface 2020 to present)
- Click the 'Menu' icon from the left-side bar of the FireStick home screen.
- Scroll down to 'Settings'.
- Select My Fire TV.
- Select About.
- Select Network. You will see 'MAC Address (Wi-Fi)' in the bottom right corner.
Apple TV:
- Go to the main menu on your Apple TV and select Settings.
- In the Settings Menu, select About.
- Here you can find your MAC Address listed as the Wireless ID.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
- Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll down through the menu and select Internet.
- The Nintendo Switch console's MAC address will be listed under System MAC Address.
PlayStation 4:
- Turn on your PlayStation 4 without any disk in the drive and wait for the menu to pop up.
- Navigate to the Settings icon (located on the far left).
- Select the System icon under the Settings menu.
- You will see your MAC address listed on this screen, containing letters and numbers in the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
PlayStation 5:
- Turn on your PlayStation 5 without a disk in the drive.
- On the home screen, click on the settings icon (gear) in the top-right corner.
- Select System.
- Under System Software, select Console Information.
- You will see the MAC addresses for LAN cable (Ethernet) and Wi-Fi.
Roku:
- From the Home screen, press Up to make the Menu Bar appear.
- Select Settings.
- Select Player Info.
Roku TV:
- Enter the Internet menu.
- Select Setup new wireless connection.
- Highlighting either "scan again" or "scan again to see all networks" options displays an informational panel with the wireless MAC address of your Roku TV.
Xbox One:
- Go to the Xbox dashboard, then My Xbox, then Settings
- Select Network
- Select Advanced Settings
- Your MAC address will be listed next to MAC on the right side of the screen.
Xbox 360
- Go to Settings
- Select System
- Select Network Settings, then Configure Network or Edit Settings.
- Select the Additional Settings tab, then choose Advanced Settings.
- Your MAC address will be listed next to MAC on the bottom of the screen.
- You may need to select Edit Settings to see your MAC
