Contribute or Report a Letter
Have you come across a letter, postcard, visiting card, or inscribed offprint by Ignaz Goldziher? Do you work in an archive whose finding aids do not descend to the level of individual correspondents? A query against the name "Goldziher" in an unpublished register, or a glance into a box labeled "correspondence G", may retrieve what no scholar working from outside could find.
For each item, a minimal record is more valuable than a hundred unrecorded discoveries. Please send to [email protected] the following:
- Holding institution and collection / fonds
- Shelfmark or call number
- Addressee
- Date and place (as far as legible)
- Language(s)
- Extent (letter / postcard / card; number of pages)
- Whether a digital reproduction exists or could be made
- Your name, affiliation, and email (optional for the record, needed for follow-up)
For institutions: Libraries, archives, and research institutions holding Goldziher's letters are invited to join the project as partners: to search their holdings, to supply PDF surrogates for inclusion in the shared platform, and to provide letters of intent and cost estimates for digitization where needed. Rights remain with the holding institution. As an alternative, the digital material may be uploaded to a repository of your choice, with the metadata and DOI for the digitized objects then provided to us. Please contact Sabine Schmidtke ([email protected]) for the participation terms.
For editors and historians of the field: The many unedited correspondences—individual exchanges in full, thematic dossiers across correspondences, the letters Goldziher himself treated as scholarship—await study. The bibliographical guide to the published correspondence records what has been done so far.
