IAS High Energy Theory Seminar
Charged Black Holes and Charged Particle Production
Abstract: Over the last few years it has been understood that black holes sufficiently close to extremality receive large quantum gravity corrections from large fluctuations of the metric. These corrections modify standard properties of near extremal black holes such as their entropies and spectra of neutral particles they emit through Hawking radiation such as photons and gravitons.
In this talk I will describe how charged black holes emit charged particles, and in which regimes quantum gravity effects are (or are not) important. I will also explain how Hawking's formula for the production of charged particles can be derived by studying Schwinger pair production on a charged black hole background, and how this derivation gives a natural interpretation to the superradiant bound appearing in Hawking's formula.
