How to map network drives

Network file storage is provided for all School of Math Faculty, Members and Staff.  The table below lists the most common network drive shares:

If the network path you are trying to access is not listed above, please contact the Math Computing Group.

Note: If you are attempting to map a network drive from on campus using your personal computer or from an off-campus location, you will need to first connect to the Institute's network via a virtual private network (VPN). Please visit the Institute's OpenVPN webpage for further instructions.

Mapping Network Drives

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar, the Start menu, or press Windows Key+E.
  2. Select This PC from the left pane. Then, click the 3 dots on the top bar and select Map network drive.
  3. In the Drive list, select an available drive letter. (It is recommended that you choose the drive letter that corresponds with the selected network drive.)
  4. In the Folder box, type the path of the folder you would like to map a network drive to.  Please see the list of available network drives above.  
  5. (Optional) To connect every time you log on to your PC, select the Reconnect at sign-in checkbox.
  6. Select the Connect using different credentials checkbox.
  7. Select Finish.
  8. When prompted, enter your username and passphrase. Enter your username in the following format: IAS\<username>
  9. Click OK.

If you are using a computer other than your own, DO NOT FORGET to disconnect your drive once you are finished. This is particularly important if you are using a machine in a public computer cluster.

  1. In Finder, navigate to Go > Connect to Server. Alternatively, you can press Command+K.
  2. In the Server Address field, enter smb:// followed by the address of the network drive you wish to map.
    • If you are a Faculty member, enter smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/faculty/username
      e.g. smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/faculty/jdoe
    • If you are a Member, enter smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/member/username
      e.g. smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/member/jdoe

    • If you are a Staff member, enter smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/staff/username
      e.g. smb://fs.ds.ias.edu/math_home/staff/jdoe

      Note: For Macs, you will need to use a forward slash (/) rather than a backslash (\) for the folder address.

  3. When prompted, enter your IAS username and passphrase.  Please enter your IAS username in the form of IAS\Username.
  4. Click OK.

Disconnecting/Unmapping Network Drives

  1. Open File Explorer, then navigate to This PC.
  2. Right-click on the drive you wish to unmap. A dialog menu will appear, where you can choose Disconnect.

  1. Open File Explorer, then navigate to This PC.
  2. Click on the drive you wish to unmap.
  3. Click on the three dots in the top bar. 
  4. Select Disconnect network drive.
  1. Open Finder.
  2. If you see your drive listed on the left sidebar, select the Eject button next to it to disconnect the network drive.
  3. If you do not see your drive listed on the sidebar, use the Finder window to navigate to your drive.
  4. Click on the gear icon on the top menu bar, then click Eject <network drive>.
