A word about eduroam

What is eduroam?

eduroam (short for "education roaming") is a secure, worldwide wireless network service designed for the global academic and research community. It allows students, researchers, and staff at participating institutions to access the internet seamlessly, whether on their home campus or at another participating institution. With over 10,000 eduroam institutions worldwide, the service provides reliable, secure internet connectivity across nearly every corner of the globe. 

eduroam uses a federated authentication model, so users authenticate with their home institution's credentials. This ensures that an eduroam user’s login information remains secure and private because it is verified by their home institution's servers.

If you are a scholar or staff member visiting from a participating eduroam institution, connecting to our wireless network is straightforward:

  1. Ensure your device is configured for eduroam: Most institutions provide setup instructions for connecting to eduroam. If you haven’t configured your device yet, please consult your home institution’s IT support or the eduroam setup guide.
  2. Select the eduroam network: On your device, find and select the "eduroam" wireless network.
  3. Log in with your home institution credentials: Use your full institutional email address (e.g., [email protected]) and your password to authenticate.
  4. Enjoy seamless connectivity: Once authenticated, you’ll have secure internet access on our campus and at any other eduroam-enabled institution. 

If you are a scholar-in-residence at the Institute for the coming year, we recommend using your IAS-provided username and passphrase to connect to our wireless network. Here’s why:

  1. Access to Extended Library Resources: While eduroam provides internet access, some IAS Library resources are restricted to users authenticated with IAS credentials. With your IAS login, you’ll gain access to these exclusive resources, which are unavailable to campus guests on the eduroam network.
  2. Enhanced Support: Using your IAS credentials ensures you are fully integrated into our network, enabling us to provide better technical support and access to additional services tailored to your needs.
  3. Seamless Integration: Your IAS credentials are designed to work across all IAS systems, providing a unified and efficient experience throughout your time here.
