Research Statement: Sword and Brush: Portraits of Samurai Life in Early Modern Japan (1600-1868) is a collection of biographies of samurai. Through the lives of fourteen individuals, the book aims to capture the larger story of the transformation of the samurai from largely illiterate, landed warriors to an urban, cultured, and primarily stipended bureaucratic elite.
