Participants in the 2013 Prospects in Theoretical Physics (PiTP) Program gathered for a full group photo1 outside of Fuld Hall.
Over 100 participants attended PiTP on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). The 2013 Program schedule offered participants the opportunity to attend three daily lectures, as well as afternoon problem-sessions led by lecturers. The Scientific Organizers and Lecturers for PiTP 2013 were: Nima Arkani-Hamed (Institute for Advanced Study), Robbert Dijkgraaf (Institute for Advanced Study), Beate Heinemann (University of California, Berkeley), Elliot Lipeles (University of Pennsylvania), Juan Maldacena (Institute for Advanced Study), Michelangelo Mangano (CERN), Patrick Meade (Stony Brook University), Chiara Nappi (Princeton University), Nathan Seiberg (Institute for Advanced Study), Sunil Somalwar (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), Raman Sundrum (University of Maryland), Jesse Thaler (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Scott Thomas (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), Natalia Toro (Perimeter Institute), Chris Tully (Princeton University), Neal Weiner (New York University), Edward Witten (Institute for Advanced Study), and Kathryn Zurek (University of Michigan).
- PiTP lecturers and organizers gathered for several group photos during the course of the two-week program: Group 12 (from left to right: Somalwar, Mangano, Thomas, Nappi, Arkani-Hamed, Toro and Sundrum); Group 22 (from left to right: Arkani-Hamed, Meade, Weiner, Lipeles, Thaler and Thomas); and Group 32 (from left to right: seated are Lipeles, Zurek and Nappi; standing are Maldacena, Thomas, Somalwar, Heinemann, Seiberg and Witten). Lecturer not pictured here: Chris Tully.
- Lectures and afternoon problem-sessions were held in Wolfensohn Hall1, where speakers including Arkani-Hamed1, Sundrum1 and Zurek3 gave diverse talks on a wide variety of subjects related to this year's program topic, LHC Physics.
- In addition to posing questions to speakers during the structured setting of the afternoon problem-sessions, participants were encouraged to approach lecturers for one-on-one and small group discussions after their talks, on breaks, and during meals and evening events, as seen in these photos of individual discussions with Professors Maldacena1 (photo left), Somalwar2 (photo right) and Thaler2 (photo center, standing).
Robbert Dijkgraaf, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study and Leon Levy Professor, hosted three special evening events during the program, as well, providing participants with additional opportunities to build friendships and exchange ideas in a relaxed setting. The Director's Dinner was held during the first week in the Institute Dining Hall (Dinner Photos: 12, 22, 32, 42, 52 and 62), and both weeks featured a casual gathering at the Director's home, Olden Farm. Joined by his wife Pia de Jong and his children, the Director kindly invited participants and lecturers to enjoy a cooling dip in their pool2 twice during the program, with week two's festivities also offering a pizza dinner2 and outdoor games (including badminton2, frisbee2 and volleyball2).
As you can see, 2013 was another busy and productive year for the Prospects in Theoretical Physics Program!
