Abstract: We discuss the possible transition between string scale black holes and self gravitating fundamental strings. We find evidence for a smooth transition in the heterotic string case while in the type II case they cannot be connected as classical solutions. We also describe the implications of this for black holes that have momentum and fundamental string winding charges.
