Discontinuous Galerkin-finite difference hybrid method for computational astrophysics

Abstract: I will provide a brief introduction to the nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, discuss struggles of spectral-type numerical methods in handling shocks and Gibbs phenomenon, then present a DG-finite difference hybrid scheme being developed and used in our collaboration for computational relativistic astrophysics. This talk aims to provide a casual, pedagogical guide to the DG method - as well as its limitations - to everyone, keeping technical discussions to a minimum.
