The California Legacy Survey: Three Decades of Radial Velocities Uncover the Occurrence of Giant Planets Beyond the Ice Line

We present a radial velocity (RV) survey of 719 main-sequence stars hosting 178 exoplanets. The survey started in 1988 and expanded in 1994 with the installation of the HIRES instrument at Keck Observatory. This is the longest duration continuous RV survey to date. The unprecedented baseline provides sufficient sensitivity to massive, long-period giant planets to measure their occurrence rates and directly compare to the rates derived from direct imaging and microlensing surveys. We find that the frequency of giant planets drops off significantly beyond 8 au in good agreement with recent results from independent techniques and extrapolations from previous RV studies. We also find that sub-Jovian mass planets are more common than their larger counterparts at all orbital separations, including near 1-5 au where the occurrence of both classes of planets reach a maximum.
