Particularly with the advent of Gaia, we can use Galactic SNRs as new probes of supernova progenitors.  In particular, we can constrain how many were binaries or triples at death and how
many of these systems survived.  We can also isolate the stellar populations near a SNR to try to infer the nature of the progenitor as is done in external galaxies.  For example, the Vela pulsar probably formed from a quite low mass star that was not in a binary at death.  The ability to follow the motions of the stars near Vela also provides a cautionary tale about interpreting the similar analyses in external galaxies.
