Set Theory Group

The Ultrapower Axiom, Determinacy, and Very Large Cardinals.

Abstract. This talk will survey the Ultrapower Axiom (UA), an amalgamation principle in set theory that has emerged as a common structural feature of three very different set-theoretic frameworks: canonical inner models, determinacy axioms, and very strong large cardinal hypotheses. I will focus on the mysterious analogies among these subjects, as well as two recent complementary theorems of Woodin and the speaker that begin to clarify the role of UA in set theory.
