Information for Researchers
The Archives Center provides reference service with access to all non-restricted materials to all researchers.
We are happy to answer questions about our holdings and provide research assistance when possible. Because of our limited staffing, we recommend that those with in-depth research questions visit us in person to consult the collections themselves or hire a research assistant to conduct research on their behalf.
We welcome reference inquiries via email or phone.
Staff are usually available for in person research visits Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Researchers who wish to use the collections in person are encouraged to contact us in advance to make an appointment, to ensure that staff will be available and have materials ready for consultation.
Photocopying is available at twenty cents per copy, as long as the photocopying process will not harm the items being copied. Photocopying must be done by the archives staff, and thus an order of more than a few pages may mean a slight delay for the researcher in obtaining the copies.
Scans in PDF format can be provided for most materials at no charge. As with photocopying, scanning must be done by the archives staff, and thus an order of more than a few pages may mean a slight delay for the researcher.
Digital files of images are available to the researcher, assuming no copyright restrictions apply. We typically provide 300 d.p.i. jpg files.
Individuals are welcome to bring digital cameras into our reading room to make images for personal use.
Holdings are available for research, subject to some restrictions placed by offices and donors. Most notably, Institute administrative records are closed for 30 years from the date of creation. Letters of recommendation are closed until both the author and subject of the recommendation have died.
Researchers sign a registration form that includes an agreement to abide by rules governing use.
Visitors are advised that some form of photographic identification is required for access.
