Payne-Gaposchkin (1900–1979) is one of the twentieth\ncentury’s most cele

sed attention both within the academy and\noutside of it. In 'Stellar Atmo

 established that\, contrary to\nscientific opinion\, hydrogen and helium w
ere the most abundant\nelements in the universe– effectively “discovering
the nature of\nthe universe.”  In both her professional and private life\,
\nPayne-Gaposchkin broke and exceeded most expectations. Even if she\nhold
s the rank of the first woman at Harvard to receive tenure\,\nhowever\, it
is still commonly held that the university and the\nprofession in general
were too slow to recognize and reward the\nmagnitude of her contributions
 . Her granddaughter\, M. Cecilia\nGaposchkin\, Willis F. Doney Member in t

IENDS DINNER WITH CHRIS HAMILTON\nWEDNESDAY\, MARCH 25\, 2026\nSIMONS HALL
  | DILWORTH ROOM\n5:45 P.M.–6:15 P.M. | DINNER AVAILABLE THROUGH THE SERVE
RY\n6:20 P.M. | PROGRAM START\n\nSpiral structure is one of the most beaut
iful and striking aspects of\ngalaxies like the Milky Way. It has fascinat
ed astronomers and\nastrophysicists since the first spiral arms were disco
 vered by William\nParsons\, third Earl of Rosse\, in 1845. Yet–more than 1
60 years\nlater–we still have only a partial understanding of why spirals
\narise\, how long they live\, and what they are really telling us about\n
galaxies\, gravity\, and dark matter. In this talk Chris Hamilton\, John\n
 N. Bahcall Fellow in the School of Natural Sciences\, will discuss the\ncu
rrent state of the field in spiral galaxy observations with the\nJames Web
b Space Telescope. He will then introduce the paradigmatic\ntheories that
were developed in the 1960s to explain spiral behavior\nbut remain contest
ed today. Finally\, Chris will discuss recent work\nthat unifies many of t
hese theories into a single mathematical\nframework\, and speculate on wha
 t the next few years—or indeed the\nnext 160—might bring.\n\nTo learn more

The book offers an account\nof Arabic literary history through the lens o

 assical period:\nthe _Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī_\, a twelfth-century collection

oring the _Maqāmāt_ to its place as the\npinnacle of Arabic style and as a

issioned in 1971 to paint a mural for\nthe women’s house on Rikers Island\
, the large island prison on the\nEast River in New York City. She asked t

TING NOW?: A 1000-YEAR VIEW_\n \nThe emergence of mechanized Chinese writi
ng in the nineteenth century\nand digital Chinese writing in the twentieth
posed profound practical\nand conceptual challenges to a writing system w
hose history spans\nmillennia. The dynamism\, reach\, and efficacy of wood
block printing\,\nfor example\, gave rise to seemingly irresolvable puzzle
s: How does one\n“fit” 100\,000 Chinese characters inside Morse Code? How
does one\nfit them on typewriter and computer keyboards?\n \nIn confrontin
 g these challenges\, a motley\, transnational throng of\nengineers\, lingu
 ists\, state-builders\, and everyday users did more than\nsolve a series o
f wicked-hard technical problems. They fashioned an\nentirely new mode of
 Chinese writing—indeed\, a new way of thinking\nabout writing itself—which
I call _hypography_: a mode of writing in\nwhich the primary act is no lo
nger the production of signs in any\nconventional semiotic sense\, but ins
tead the search for\, selection of\,\nand retrieval of Chinese characters
and other glyphs from memory. In\nthe digital age\, the act of “writing Ch
inese” has become the act\nof “writing symbols with which to _find _Chines
e characters.'\n \nThis shift coincided with a deeper transformation in th
 e material\nlogic of writing technologies worldwide. Pre-modern modes of\n
 inscription—be they woodblock printing\, calligraphy\, epigraphy\, or\nlit
hography—all shared at least one thing in common: they all\nfunctioned thr
ough the addition or subtraction of matter. Ink laid\ndown. Wood gouged ou
 t. Mass augmented or mass reduced. However\,\nChinese telegraphy\, typewri

_ON THE ALTAR: A HISTORY OF SACRIFICE FROM THE SACRED TO THE SECULAR_\nWED
 NESDAY\, APRIL 15\, 2026 \n5:00 P.M. | RECEPTION\n5:30 P.M. | TALK\nRUBENS
TEIN COMMONS CAFÉ\n\nIn _On the Altar_\, Jonathan Sheehan\, Hans Kohn Memb
 er (2020–21) in\nthe School of Historical Studies\, offers a new account o
f sacrifice\nboth sacred and secular. His story is in part a history of th
e\nChristian imagination across the centuries of the Reformation–when\nnew
martyrs and holy warriors fought for the truth of their\nsacrifices\, whe
n the empire of New World sacrifice was recruited to\nsettle Christian con
flicts\, and when the sacrifices of the ancient\nHebrews were weaponized f
or orthodoxy. But it is a history of the\nsecular imagination as well\, as
the vast archive of Christian\nsacrifice was dispersed and applied to thi
ngs that humans make: their\nreligions\, politics\, and societies. With _O
n the Altar_\, Sheehan\nreveals a new history of both Christianity and the
secular world in\nwhich we still live.\n\nJonathan Sheehan is Sidney Hell
man Ehrman Professor of European\nHistory at the University of California\
, Berkeley. He writes on the\nintellectual and cultural history of early m
odern Europe\, with\nparticular focus on Christianity and the making of th

ence honoring the scholarship of Professor\nDidier Fassin from April 18-20
\, 2026. This international gathering\nbrings together leading scholars to
engage with Fassin's\ntransformative contributions to social science—from
his\ngroundbreaking work on moral anthropology to his critical\,\nillumin
ating studies of policing\, migration\, and public health.\nThrough rigoro
us ethnographic research conducted in prisons\,\nhospitals\, police depart
ments\, refugee camps\, and humanitarian zones\,\nFassin has demonstrated
how sustained attention to lived experience\ncan illuminate the ethical co

 works—moral economies\, humanitarian\nreason\, the politics of life—have r
 eshaped debates across\nanthropology\, sociology\, law\, social theory\, a

\nprecarity\, and the relationship between creative and scholarly\npractic
 e. Over six panels\, participants will explore how Fassin's\nscholarship h

 Y_\nWEDNESDAY\, APRIL 22\, 2026 | 4:30 P.M.\nWOLFENSOHN HALL\n\nJoin Franc
esca Trivellato\, Professor in the School of Historical\nStudies\, and Ann
McGrath\, Patrons’ Endowment Fund Member in the\nSchool of Historical Stu
dies\, for the screening of _Japarta: A Journey\nto the Gurindji Way_\, wi
th a Q&A to follow.\n\n_Japarta: A Journey to the Gurindji Way_ tells the
poignant story of\nMinoru Hokari\, a brilliant young economics student fro
m Japan who was\ninspired to try to find a way of studying Gurindji histor
 y and\nculture. \n\nIn the 1980s\, the Wave Hill Walk-off—a landmark event
in the\nAustralian Aboriginal land rights movement—came to his attention.
\nThis film is Hokari’s story\, often told in his own voice\, and it\nreve
als the close connection that developed between him and the\nGurindji. It
follows his spiritual and intellectual transformation\,\nand how he was\,
in Gurindji terms\, “called” by the land to help\nthe Gurindji tell their
story to an international audience.\n\nJaparta was the “skin name” given b
y the Gurindji to Minoru. He\neventually spent many months living with the
Gurindji\, studying with\nelders and writing the book _Radical Oral Histo
ry_\, which reflects\nupon the Gurindji understanding of history in a refr
 eshingly whimsical\nvoice. Hokari’s cross-cultural practice has had a prof
ound\ninterdisciplinary impact in Japan\, leading to numerous conferences\
,\npublications\, and exhibitions\, while the scholarship in his memory ha
s\nenabled many researchers to create further breakthroughs in the field\n
of Indigenous history\, moving towards a more expansive approach to\nhisto
ry in general. \n\nAssistive listening devices will be available on site.
