The Time is Now: Findings from TEAM-UP Report to Increase the Number of African Americans with Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and Astronomy

Abstract: In December 2017, the American Institute of Physics (AIP) convened a committee of a dozen professionals to work alongside of its staff members to study the persistently low numbers of bachelor’s degrees earned in Physics and Astronomy by African American students. The team was comprised of physicists, physics educators, and sociologists who took a multi-faceted view of the issues surrounding the student experience. Out of this two-year long study comes the report titled “The Time is Now: Systemic Changes to Increase African Americans with Bachelor’s Degrees in Physics and Astronomy”. This presentation will describe some of the most salient features that emerged from the study with a specific emphasis on factors related to mentoring.
